FAQs

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about Dutch Bros.

What is Dutch Bros?

Dutch Bros is a drive-thru coffee company founded in Southern Oregon in 1992. They currently operate in 11 states but are quickly expanding. Their core values are speed, quality, and service.

Is it Dutch Bros or Dutch Brothers?

The name of the company is actually just “Dutch Bros” though sometimes customers will refer to it as Dutch Brothers.

What makes Dutch Bros so special?

Dutch Bros has created a fanbase of very loyal customers. The staff at Dutch Bros is known to be super friendly, and the drinks are all uniquely named creations that can’t often be found elsewhere.

What is a broista?

Instead of calling their workers “barista,” they use the term “broista” to match the “Bro” in the company’s name. It’s another thing that adds to the uniqueness of Dutch Bros.

What Dutch Bros drinks are caffeine-free?

Dutch Bros has several options with no caffeine. Their smoothies, frosts, and Dutch sodas are all caffeine-free. You can also get any of the espresso-based drinks as decaf.

Which syrups are sugar-free?

Dutch Bros offers sugar-free syrups in chocolate macadamia nut, coconut, hazelnut, Irish cream, peppermint, raspberry, strawberry, and vanilla. They also carry sugar-free white chocolate, dark chocolate, and caramel sauce. They use Torani syrups. Check out my full guide on low-carb and sugar-free drinks at Dutch Bros.

Can I purchase Dutch Bros coffee beans?

Yes, Dutch Bros sells their Private Reserve blend that they use in all their shops through Amazon and elsewhere. You can order it in regular or decaf or in single-serve cups for a Keurig.

What are the most popular Dutch Bros drinks?

Dutch Bros classics are the most popular espresso-based drinks. They include the Annhialator and the Kicker. For non-espresso drinks, the Aftershock and Electric Berry are popular. The full list of flavor combos notes which ones are featured and popular.

Does Dutch Bros have a secret menu?

Not really. Dutch Bros encourages you to make your own creations and lists a variety of named flavor combos on the menu on their app.

Can you get a gift card at Dutch Bros?

Yes, Dutch Bros offers gift cards. They are perfect for birthdays, holidays, or teachers. You can purchase online or at any Dutch Bros stand. Specific stands offer discounts throughout the year. Follow your local stand on Facebook to keep up-to-date.

How does Dutch Bros make their mochas?

Dutch Bros makes their mochas different than many places, including Starbucks. If you order a “mocha” it will be made with chocolate milk instead of chocolate sauce. This does create a smoother taste, but also means you can’t adjust the level of chocolatey-ness in the drink.

If you order a “white chocolate mocha” they will add white chocolate sauce to chocolate milk. If you want a white mocha like you would get at Starbucks you need to be clear that you want a breve or latte with white chocolate syrup and leave out the term “mocha.”

Does Dutch Bros offer a free drink on your birthday?

Yes! If you have the app you can get a free drink on your birthday. And the offer is good for a whole week, unlike another popular chain that only offers it on that specific day.

Not only that, but Dutch offers a half-off drink on the week surrounding your half-birthday!

Starbucks vs. Dutch Bros?

Why does Dutch Bros have its own lingo?

Dutch Bros started in 1992, which was before Starbucks had the huge influence they have today. Dutch Bros grew on its own, separate path. They also love having their own fun and “cool” way to name drinks such as the Double Rainbro or the Annihilator. It all adds to the culture of their stands.

How to order

Since Dutch Bros focuses on named flavor combos rather than drinks, you often need to order more specifically than at other coffee shops.

The suggested order to request your drink is:

Using this you would tell your broista, “May I have a medium, iced, aftershock, rebel, with soft top, please?”

Dutch Bros offers drinks in kids, small, medium, and large sizes. For espresso-based drinks, the small and medium sizes contain two espresso shots, and the large contains four.

Drink menu

Dutch Bros offers a wide variety of drinks on their menu. Their selection includes several caffeinated as well as non-caffeinated options. There is truly something to make everyone happy.

Most of these drinks can come in three ways: hot, iced or blended. Iced is when the drink is made with cold liquid and poured over ice. Blended is when the drink is blended with ice and creates a drink similar to a Frappuccino or smoothie.

Breve
This drink is very similar to a latte but is made with breve, which is half and half, and espresso. This is typically the default at Dutch Bros when ordering a hot espresso drink.

Latte
A beverage made with espresso and milk. The default milk at Dutch Bros is 2% dairy but you can also choose chocolate dairy, almond, oat, or coconut milk. It can be hot or iced.

Cold Brew
Dutch offers classic cold brew and nitro cold brew options.

Americano
Dutch does not serve drip coffee, so an Americano is what you will get if you order a cup of black coffee. It’s water combined with espresso and can come hot or iced. It’s a favorite stand-alone drink of many.

Tea
Dutch Bros’ teas that can be ordered hot are Earl grey, cinnamon spice, citrus ginko green tea, decaf Ceylon tea, and Paris black tea. All teas can be served hot, iced or blended. The teas are from Harney & Sons.

Chais are also available and can be hot, iced, or blended.

Dutch Cocoa
A Dutch Cocoa is a hot chocolate made with Dutch Bros’ chocolate milk. You can add flavors to jazz it up.

Rebel energy drink
Rebels are a cold carbonated energy drink only sold at Dutch Bros. (Similar to Red Bull.) They are available in regular or sugar-free and are meant to be customized with a flavored syrup. Find out more in my in-depth article all about Rebels.

Dutch Soda
Dutch sodas are sparkling water that is meant to be customized with your favorite flavors. They are non-caffeinated.

Lemonade
Dutch Bros offers lemonades and encourages you to add your favorite flavor combos.

Dutch Freeze
A Dutch freeze is Dutch Bros’ answer to Starbucks’ Frappuccino. It’s a blended iced coffee drink similar to a smoothie or milkshake.

(Related: Make a freeze at home with this recipe!)

Dutch Frost
A Dutch Frost is a milkshake. Add any of the available flavors to create a delicious treat.

Smoothie
A Dutch Bros’ smoothie is their fruit-based blended drink. Their base flavors are peach, strawberry, green apple, and mango.

Kids
Dutch Bros offers several of their drinks in kid cups. You can get a smoothie, Dutch frost, soda (just carbonated water), or a not-so-hot (hot chocolate.) All are non-caffeinated. I have a full guide that covers everything about kids’ drinks at Dutch Bros.

Modifiers and extras

Dutch Bros offers a variety of extra ways to change and enhance your drink.

Milk options
Dutch Bros offers dairy, oat, coconut, and almond kinds of milk.

Soft top
Dutch Bros’ soft top is often added to cold brew but it can be added to most drinks. It’s similar to sweet cream cold foam. Dutch Bros uses Rich’s On Top Soft Whip Topping for their soft top.

Whipped cream
Most Dutch Bros drinks do not come with whipped cream as a default. You can always ask for it added!

Dub shot
A double shot of espresso.

White coffee
White coffee beans are roasted in a different way which creates lower acidity and 70% more caffeine when brewed. You can select this option for any of your espresso-based drinks.

Extra flavor
Dutch Bros measures flavor by the scoop, not by pumps. If you want extra flavor you can ask for an extra scoop (or sometimes they say shot.)

Decaf
If you want less caffeine, you can order drinks half-caf or decaf.

Drizzle
The most common options for drizzle are caramel, dark chocolate, and white chocolate sauces but you can ask for any syrup to be drizzled on your drink.

Other toppings
Dutch Bros offers a variety of toppings including cinnamon and birthday sprinkles.

Drink styles

Dutch Bros’ broistas can make your drink in different “styles.” This means that extra things are added to your drink or it’s made in a particular way. Sometimes you see these listed on the official menu and sometimes not.

Avalanche
Avalanche style means two ounces of frost (milkshake) mix is added to your drink.

Picture Perfect
Picture perfect style means that chocolate and caramel are drizzled around your cup and whipped cream is added to the top.

Mafia
Mafia style is adding extra sweetness and two extra espresso shots to your drink.

Parfait
Parfait style is layering your drink with whipped cream.

Flavor combos

Dutch Bros operates on the premise of flavor combos and has fun and quirky names for most of these.

While most coffee shops name a drink, Dutch Bros name flavor combos. This can feel hard to get the hang of at first but it’s one of the things that makes Dutch so fun and unique.

Sometimes these are called the “secret menu” for Dutch Bros, but it’s really no secret! It’s possible some combos are not currently listed but have been in the past.

For instance, instead of the “Golden Eagle” is a specific drink, it is in reference to using the flavor combo of vanilla and caramel sauce to make a drink.

You will need to specify what type of “Golden Eagle” you would like when ordering. For instance, you could order a “Golden Eagle Freeze” and would receive a blended drink with vanilla, caramel sauce, whipped cream, and caramel drizzle.

There are often seasonal and promotional drinks available that change every few months.

If you want to make any of these flavor combos at home, you can buy the same syrups that Dutch Bros uses on Amazon or elsewhere. They use the Torani brand for their syrups and sauces.

I have a whole guide specifically about low-carb options at Dutch Bros. And also an article focusing just on sugar-free options. Be sure to check it out if you are watching your sugar intake.

Syrups:

Sauces:

If you want any of these syrups at home, you can buy Torani brand syrups and sauces on Amazon or at most grocery stores.

Toppings

  • Birthday sprinks
  • Cinnamon sprinks
  • Chocolate sprinks
  • Nutmeg sprinks (discontinued spring of 2023)
  • Soft top
  • Raw sugar sprinks
  • Whipped cream

Food

Dutch Bros does not focus on food as much as many other coffee shops. They have two options available.

Muffin top
Muffin tops will make you feel like you’re in a Seinfeld episode. They are a flat-ish muffin, meant to replicate just the top. They are available in lemon poppyseed, chocolate chip, and orange cranberry.

(Did you know you can buy a muffin top pan to make them at home??)

Granola bar
Dutch Bros offers a three-ounce granola nut bar.

Food being tested
In some markets, Dutch Bros stores are testing food including donut holes, granola, and more! Hopefully, this is a sign of things that will be coming everywhere soon.

In September in Salem, Oregon Dutch Bros offered a pumpkin loaf and a pumpkin chocolate chip loaf. I’ve also heard that a non-dairy soft top is being tested!

Stickers

Dutch Bros offers monthly and special stickers to their customers. This is one fun thing about Dutch Bros that sets it apart. Many make a habit of collecting and trading stickers.

Currently, a new sticker is released on the first Wednesday of each month. They also have stickers available for a variety of holidays and special promotions. Stickers are available until they run out.

The stickers can be put on car bumpers, your favorite water bottle, your phone case, or wherever you prefer.
