If you aren’t familiar with this product, Refreshers are a caffeinated fruit juice drink. They are made with a green coffee extract that does not have a flavor and does not taste like coffee at all. (Although the Dunkin’ version uses a green tea extract for the caffeine.)
The Refresher base lends itself well to being mixed with other flavors, such as lemonade or coconut milk. And this blended version, with an extra strawberry boost, is simply delightful.
Thankfully, you can now purchase a Refresher base for your home, so you can easily make this drink in the comfort of your own kitchen. With just four ingredients plus ice, you can have this as a homemade treat and save money at the same time.
Strawberry Açaí Refresher Base
The Dr. Smoothie Refresher bases are a game-changer for those of us who want to enjoy a homemade Refresher. They have a Strawberry Açaí Refresher option, and it’s very similar to what is used at Starbucks. You can order it from Amazon.
Keep in mind, it comes as a concentrate, so you will add water (or lemonade for this recipe) to get the correct proportions. I had a bit of sticker shock when I first saw the price, but you can get about twelve 16-ounce drinks from one container.
This base is made of real fruit juice, and includes green coffee extract for caffeine. But, it doesn’t taste like coffee at all! It’s just a caffeine boost.
If you are wondering, açaí is a fruit that comes from a type of palm tree. It’s been popularized over the years because it contains antioxidents. It’s pronounced with three syllables, ah-sigh-EE. But if you say it with only two, ah-sigh, people also know what you are talking about.
You can choose any lemonade, or make your own.
Since the Refresher base and the strawberry puree both already include sugar, I’d suggest using a lemonade with a lower sugar content, but that’s up to you.
If you want to order online, this is a great lemonade option on Amazon.
The freeze-dried strawberries are blended into this drink to give it more strawberry flavor. This is what Starbucks includes in its Frozen Strawberry Açaí Lemonade Refresher.
These are nice ingredients to have on hand because they are shelf stable. They also have all the water content already drained out, so they won’t add any extra liquid to your drinks.
But, if you have fresh strawberries on hand, feel free to add those instead.
Trader Joe’s is my usual go-to for freeze-dried strawberries, but you can find them at most grocery stores or online at Amazon.
The strawberry puree is used to create a layered, swirl look in this frozen lemonade. It also adds an additional strawberryness to the taste.
Personally, I love this drink even without adding the puree, but it is a nice addition, especially presentation-wise. You could also add it directly into the blender and mix it all together.
You can make your own puree from strawberries, or you can purchase one. I used this strawberry puree mix from Finest Call. I found it at my local Chef’s Store, but you can also purchase it on Amazon. Another great option is made by Torani and is on Amazon.
Yes, the Refresher base includes caffeine. It comes from green coffee extract.
This drink is more like a slushie than a frappé or frappuccino. It is water-based (meaning no milk) and does not include a thickening or binding agent. If you want to make it more frappé-style you can add 1/4 cup of a frappé mix such as this Ghirardelli Frappé Mix.

Definitely. You could substitute water. Or, you could substitute coconut milk and it would be a version of a blended Starbucks Pink Drink.
